CONSTRUCTION:

Day 1: Monday 8.11.99(Intermittent rain throughout the day): Setting up of trestles on the site
Setting up of tripod gantry and block and tackle.
Transportation of the main timber sections forming wall plates, frame posts, main ties, stub ties, king posts, corner and intermediate posts from the drop off point at the farm to the building site.
Marking out of structural members to correct sections sizes and location of rebates for joints.
Sharpening of studs for location in 40mm diameter rebates in wall plates.

Day 2: Tuesday 9.11.99 (Intermittent rain throughout the day) :Completion of marking out of wall plates, wall posts, first frame posts, main ties, stub ties and king post.
Cutting of mortises, tenons and tongues in these parts.Working these parts to final sizes with axes.
Completing preparation of studs.

 

Day 3: Wednesday 10.11.99 ( Rain in morning, cleared up in afternoon.):
Setting up of first two corner posts.
Raising first wall plate into position on the corner posts .
Setting up of intermediate wall posts and studs on first wall and creating positive camber on the top side on the wall plate.(about 4cm; so that it ends up looking flat; )
Starting weaving of hazel wattle between studs on first wall.
Completion of mortises, tongues and tenons on first frame.
Setting out of first gable end and digging pits for first frame posts.
Preparation of the other wall plate and second frame.

 

Day 4: Thursday 11.11.99 ( No rain; Bright and cold.):
Continuing wattle weaving and creation of doorway opening on first wall.
Setting up of first frame posts at near gable.
Raising of main tie and location on frame post tenons.
Raising of King Post and location of tongue through main tie.
Location of stub tie and connection to wall plate on first wall.Start of carving on near gable main tie.
Setting out and location of remaining two corner posts.
Raising second wall plate into position on the corner posts .
Start of setting up intermediate wall posts on second wall.
Pits dug for second frame posts at far gable.

 

 

 

 

Day 5: Friday 12.11.99 ( Bright and cold.):
Continuing wattle weaving on first wall.
Continuing carving on near gable main tie.
Completion of intermediate wall posts and studs on second wall and creating positive camber on the top side on the wall plate. ( Entasis; about 4cm)
Starting weaving of hazel wattle between studs on second wall.
Location of second stub tie on first frame and connection to second wall plate.
Setting up of second frame posts at far gable.
Raising of second main tie and King Post and location on frame post tenons.
Location of stub ties and connection to wall plates on first and second walls.

Day 6: Sunday 14.11.99 ( Rain in morning):
Continuing wattle weaving on both walls.
Continuing carving on near gable main tie.
Starting carving on far gable main tie.
Location of studs in gable walls.
Setting up of third frame posts at internal partition.
Raising of third main tie and King Post and location on frame post tenons.
Location of stub ties and connection to wall plates.
Location of studs for internal partition.
Location of gable tie at near gable.

Day 7: Monday 15.11.99. ( Bright and cold.):
Completion of wattle weaving on first wall.
Continuing wattle weaving on second wall.
Completion of carving on near gable main tie.
Continuing carving on far gable main tie.
Location of studs in gable walls.
Setting up of fourth and final frame posts.
Raising of fourth main tie and king post and location on frame post tenons.
Location of stub ties and connection to wall plates.
Location of studs for internal partition.
Location of gable tie at far gable.

 

 

 

 

Day 8: Tuesday 16.11.99 (Bright and cold.):
Continuing wattle weaving on second wall.
Continuing carving on far gable main tie.
Raising of roof ridge and creation of positive camber on top surface. ( about 5cm;- otherwise the roof ridge looks concave.)
Location of purlins.
Location and fixing of edge rafters at both gables.
Location of temporary wind bracing at both gables.
