PHOTODOCUMENTATION

PARABOW is about the Preservation and Reconstruction of Ancient Buildings of Wood. Our project involves partners from eight European Countries who share the ambition to preserve, study, interpret and build examples of our common heritage in wooden architecture. This web site is part of the plan to bring the skills and knowledge of the participants together by establishing a platform for the dissemination of the information acquired as well as a tool for communication. Visitors are welcome to follow our progress in these pages and to add their comments, questions or suggestions.

European Co-operation
PARABOW is funded by the European Union as a 'RAPHAEL' project. The participants come from both business and educational backgrounds and include carpenters and museum workers, foresters and tree scientists, communicators and architects. The project has begun in the field of archeology and will finish with at least one re-constructed building within the funds available. During the two years scheduled for PARABOW, a manual of our activities will be prepared as source information for future re-construction projects and as course material for university study.

Re-construction or artifact
Wooden buildings from early history, have left very little evidence of their former existence when compared to the  wealth of information about stone structures and remains. The merits of re-construction as an issue falls part way between the historians and archaeologists and the history consumers; sometimes these groups have opposing views, but they are all people for whom culture and heritage is important.  There is a compromise between historical accuracy and practicalities of re-construction. The debate has already begun.

Aiming for the imagination
PARABOW's aim in the re-construction of wooden buildings from early history is to stimulate the imagination and create a tactile environment in which history can come alive.
